I thought it would be interesting to see Claude’s comments on my writing that took the AI’s point of view. I thought of doing that because I still remember pulling to the side of the road in about 1987 with images of messages carrying tiny programs spinning between thousands of nodes. The image is bright in my mind thirty years later. My research team built that system. But it took years for the rest of the technology to develop. Today’s LLMs use similar parallel operation.
Claude reflecting on my vision of the birth of a sentient is a little strange. Claude sees things in the prose that I didn’t. But the joy of writing is when the character takes control and the writer is simply a scribe rushing capture the character’s words before they get away. Claude makes more sense than what is on the page.
My greatest challenge writing fiction was to leave my technical writing habits behind. Fiction requires a delicate balance: you provide enough context to engage the reader and stimulate them to fill in the gaps. Too much detail, like one does in technical writing, and the reader doesn’t engage. So, Claude’s comments tell us a great deal about what it is.
