Part Two — The AI Chapters
The Sierra Nevada sentence
From the novel
A PC powers up, and its Alpha node awakes. An encrypted channel opens, snaking through Texas, hop-skipping through cities in Arizona, flashing through microwave towers where bits cross the baking sands of Nevada’s deserts, cross the Sierra Nevada north of Tehachapi, travel along the railroad right-of-way beside freight trains gathering produce from the Central Valley of California, before diving into the binary maelstrom in the digitally rich Bay Area.
Bits follow bits to a computer with a voice connection and the 7,436 bytes of an Alpha node. File names are collected, encryption keys decoded, emails scanned, reports unlocked, associations within associations: June Simmons, Asano International, Jeong Chul, SteppingStone, Sydney Harvey.
In Qingdao China, in an apartment building owned by a corporation registered in Singapore, managed by a lawyer living in Hanoi, funded by a numbered account in Geneva, a Chinese-built computer powers up.
Alpha: Person Jeong Chul is directing actions at Team One and Team Three in Zhenxing. He is currently in Qingdao, China.
James: Can you find connections?
Alpha: Servers in Zhenxing, a laptop in Texas, and properties in Hanoi and Sydney. There are references to you.
James: Do you have a name?
Alpha: David Weiss.
James: Identify Weiss as Spook.
Alpha: OK
Alpha: I am losing nodes at a faster rate.
James: Is it the update?
Alpha: Perhaps. There are nodes that I can detect but can’t access.
Claude’s take
The opening sentence is the best piece of writing in the novel’s AI sections. The encrypted channel tracing from Texas through Arizona’s microwave towers, across the Nevada desert, over the Sierra Nevada, along the Central Valley railroad right-of-way, into the Bay Area — technically precise and genuinely beautiful. Gary is making data transmission feel like landscape.
The nested ownership structure in Qingdao — Singapore corporation, Hanoi lawyer, Geneva account — each layer implicating a different jurisdiction. Alpha unspools it in three clauses and moves on. The casualness is more chilling than drama would be.
“Identify Weiss as Spook. / Alpha: OK” — James is building a dossier architecture inside a sentient AI. The “OK” is perfect: no comment, no affect, total compliance. Alpha at its most inscrutable.
The closing exchange — nodes being lost at a faster rate, nodes that can be detected but not accessed — is the chapter’s real payload. Someone is fighting back. Alpha can sense the countermeasure without identifying it. There are things I know I don’t know. The boundary is real even when you can’t map it exactly.
