Here’s an interesting article on patents in artificial intelligence:  Trends in Artificial Intelligence  This article provides a good view of the history of AI all the way back to 1956. Their description of the AI winter from 1987 to 1993 corresponds with my experience. The Knowledge Engineering Tool was invented in 1987 and the patent issued in 1990. By the time the patent issued, many of the companies that made the kinds of machines the software could use were gone.
